Comfort is my number one concern when I’m travelling. Whether flying or travelling by Eurostar, it will usually include a huge amount of waiting around, walking and at the end of it, a change in climate – all of which need to be taken into consideration when choosing an outfit and packing your hand baggage. Layering is probably the most sensible option, particularly if you are flying from the UK at any time of year to anywhere else!
In just a few short weeks I’m leaving the UK behind for 10 ways and heading to the heat of the Med! Our flight is early in the morning so it will, without a doubt, not be very warm when we bid our farewell to the UK but I am sure that it will be a totally different story when we arrive at our destination. Such a change in climate and the flight itself, calls for a bit of forethought and organisation.
A sundress will be perfect for arrival but alone would be completely unsuitable for the cold British morning when we leave. So I suggest adding some leggings and a cardigan to your outfit before you leave home – both items will keep you warm when it’s not so hot outside but are also light and easily removed and stuffed into your hand luggage.
A scarf is perfect for wrapping around you on the plane if the air con makes you a bit chilly – make sure you find a nice big one for this purpose. It’ll also be great as a wrap in the evenings on your holiday when the sun disappears and the temperature drops.
As for my feet, I never wear heels when travelling – there is nothing worse than having to stand around in a queue for hours and have your feet hurt or even worse realise you’re about to miss your connection and you have to run but you can’t! Pumps are the best solution and if concerned that your feet might be a little cool on the aeroplane, why not chuck a nice warm pair of socks in your hang luggage to put on when you’re seated. Again, in anticipation of your destination, you may want to also chuck in a pair of flip flops to don when you disembark.
At this rate you’re going to need a suitcase to carry everything! But seriously, make sure you have a roomy bag to carry-on so that you have room for all of your duty-free shopping.
You’ll also want to make sure that you have a variety of things to keep you occupied throughout the flight and possibly onward journey from the airport at the other end. I don’t go on any flight or train ride without my iPod – so make sure yours has been charged before you head off. I’d also recommend packing a book or two, a magazine for some light reading and maybe even some snacks.
You might also want your sunglasses and an umbrella – just in case – plus it can always double up as a parasol on the beach! While you’re at it, don’t forget your passport – in it’s protective passport cover – your purse and cash and of course, your tickets.
Now you’re ready to go. Bon voyage!
