An Art history graduate from New York University, Iris married her husband, Carl, in 1948 and together they launched a textile firm:

Through this firm, Iris worked on many design restoration projects, including work at the White House for nine presidents, from Truman, through Kennedy, to Clinton. Since the couple retired in 1992, Iris Apfel continues to consult and to give lectures on style and fashion:

In 2005, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City premiered an exhibition about the fashionable style of Iris Apfel. The exhibition was entitled, Rara Avis (Rare Bird): The Irreverent Iris Apfel. She has been described as, one of the most vivacious personalities in the worlds of fashion, textiles, and interior design, and over the past forty years, she has cultivated a personal style that is both witty and exuberantly idiosyncratic.

Is it just me, or can you see a little of Iris Apfel in last week's Style Icon, Anna dello Russo? Maybe, despite not having "had time" for children, there will be someone to take on Apfel's crown as queen of kookiness?
