I'm pretty good programming in PHP and Javascript, but now I need something that allows me to create simple desktop apps. Mostly it will be for automation scripts, too much for Apple Script, but not complex enough to jump into Cocoa and Objective-C. Examples: Manipulating text files (sorting, dupe line checking, adding/cutting parts, splitting/combining files etc.), uploading a file to several different FTP servers, sending POST requests to a server.
I often hear Pearl and Python mentioned and I believe they are pre-installed on the Mac, but I don't know much about them. What's the main difference? Which one (or something else?) would be best suited for these tasks? Which one is easier to learn?
Bonus: What's a good site to learn for someone who has general programming knowledge, but is a total noob with those languages?

Well, I don't think he'd go to that much trouble just to taunt the French media...If he does race I think the reason will be because that's what he does, and he doesn't want to stop.

Take it to apple if it's not a jb defect, your iPad is still under warranty. You may be able to get it replaced

Stunning... no other word for it. But is it the right typeface?
Good catch. I had a Homer Simpson moment shortly after I posted. I was hoping I could just quietly replace the image but the mods want me to start a new thread.
Thanks for the comments everyone. :)
Edit, new thread started

This. It's so nice to be able to turn on and off bluetooth with just a swipe of the status bar. I also like seeing how much memory is free.

Wow! Just wow. First, your movie editor cannot change your source footage. Second, DV is Digital Video. If you have analog video, then it impossible for it to be DV.
No need to be condescending. A simple explanation would suffice, especially when it's obvious he's looking for help.

Sparky, I have my G5 on a time switch to reduce power consumption. It only folds when it's on (obviously), so that's about 6-7 hours a day. So, now is your chance to come close to me! Overtaking me is a whole different story!! :D Also, does increase come in a dual proc setup and does it/folding start automatically at startup?
How much faster the console version is Vs. the GUI client is hard to say. It really depends on how fast your Mac is. If you have an older Mac (say G3) then it's a significant difference. You have a bit of overhead on your proc of the images, which aren't completely for the Graphics card. Your proc also has to process it, giving a bit of overhead. My G3 400 Mhz B&W had a lot of this overhead with the GUI client. Increase will also give a bit, but less, overhead.

By coincidence, I set my first MobileMe calendar event alert just yesterday. I was adding events for 2011 to my calendar and I decided to specify an alert, not sure if that meant simply that it would sync with iCal on my Mac and pass the alert instructions along. Now I know that I'll get alerts in MobileMe too.
I wonder what happens if you are not logged into MobileMe at the time the alert should be sent but you log in after that and before the event itself. Do you get all pending alerts when you log in?

Recently update, due to the 5pm delay touchwoods opening will revert back to normal hours on Friday morning, same protocol for queuing but of course it's going to be a long day for some. no word from the touchwood apple store as to how they will handle it to not disgruntle the other stores in the shopping centre, considering previous launches sold out and people moved on later in the day so we will see.if your going let me know and might see you there.

Well I've got iOS 4.2.1 on an iPod touch 4g, and I jailbroke it with the latest greenpoison jb so it didn't have to be tethered, and terminal just crashes right after I start it. When it was jailbroken tethered the terminal didn't work either; I'm guessing it's just not compatible with 4.2.1?
Edit: I just checked what version and what repo it was from: it was Cydia/telesphoreo, version 364.1-10. I also noticed it was designed for iOS 3 so I just got rid of it. Where can I ge a iOS 4 compatible terminal?

Hard to tell, but looks like a spec of dust under the screen to me.
Not possible because the MBA has no cover over the panel?
I have the same, but haven't had a chance to take mine in! 13" Ultimate with a stuck pixel. It was very saddening to find it - although actually it makes no difference to using it...

I may be the only one, but I think that thread titles with repeated question marks (?????) are annoying and unnecessary. It only suggests unnecessary urgency and importance to the thread the poster has written. Therefore I think there should be a rule that states that threads with more than one repeated question mark in the title will be deleted until renamed.
You're not the only one. I agree with you. :p
Your solution is a little harsh, yes, but all those repeated question (and exclamation) marks are annoying. :)

Basically, it doesn't sound too good. It might sound better with high impedance cans. I have some akg k77 and the output on my macbook sound pretty bad compared to my external soundcard.
I don't think you'll get trouble with getting enough volume out of it with high impedance headphones as the output can go ridiculously high so I don't think that would be a problem even with high impedance cans.

I too have been using Mactubes, and it works better than the in-browser flash player, but I can't seem to get quicktime to work.
"Can not open video. Please open URL with browser."
That's the error that I get when I switch to Quicktime. Any ideas?
You need to upgrade to version 3.0.4. Occasionally Youtube changes something in their urls, I think, and the program's author has to update (which he/she does promptly).

No... it amounted to some spectacular Northern Lights displays. My wife showed me bunch that were captured last night and posted to the web.... I don't know where she found them.... but they were spectacular. :)

I was just curious as I use EyeTV on my Mac Minis and was curious as to whether a SSD would help improve things. I guess I'll need to consider upgrading to the 2011 Mac Mini too when it comes out.
