How to... change your hairstyle for less than a tenner!

There is nothing that can beat the feeling of walking out of the hairdressers after an hour or two in the chair!

However I can’t afford to have my hair “done” as often as I would like and long before I can afford another visit my hair is starting to look a little tired and I am bored with the cut. As such I’ve picked up a few cheap tricks to help revitalise my cut and make it last that bit longer.

I should add, too, that my hair is shoulder length but most of these tips will be appropriate for any style.

1. Colour me beautiful. Colouring my hair is still my most favourite way of revitalising my style between cuts. I love to use L’Oreal’s Casting Crème Gloss colours as they are multi-tonal and leave my hair so so glossy. If you already have coloured hair and are looking to extend it, why not use one of Clairol’s Root Touch-up kits?

2. Curl baby, curl. Invest in some curling tongs. For those days I can’t be bothered to wash my hair (or am up too late!), I curl random bits and it instantly looks updated. I have these cheap ones from Boots and they do the job well. Ok, so they are just over a tenner – but definitely money well spent!

3. Fringe trim. I am currently sporting a fringe, hence this tip! Most salons (if you are a regular customer) offer free fringe trims – make use of this service between cuts. It will spruce up your look, particularly when your fringe is obscuring your view!

4. Accessorise. Claire’s Accessories has a multitude of cheap and chic hair clips with which you can adorn your up do. Something new will certainly brighten your ‘do!

5. Fake it. If you have long hair and have been contemplating going for the chop, or you’re just not sure you’re brave enough, why not fake it? Check out the video here for a tutorial on faking a bob!

6. Remember to water. If your hair is looking dull and dry, why not try a hydrating overnight mask like this one from KMS California?

7. Extend. Give your hair a lift by adding a few extensions to add interest. Try a couple of these clip in blond extensions for a highlighted effect. Or add a splash of colour with these from HQhair which come in 20 different colours!

8. Model behaviour. If you have some time on your hands and are brave, offer your services as a hair model. I often notice signs in local hairdressers asking for models. I even did this once. I was there for a good few hours but I had a reasonable amount of control over what I had done (“nothing too short, please”!). And it’s free. Bonus.
