Friend Friday #42: Packing for vacation

Sunset over the sea off Ibiza

Now that summer is in full swing and vacations are coming up, this week we're going to talk about what to pack to take on vacation:

1.      When it comes to packing for vacation what’s your mantra?

Every time it comes to packing for a holiday, I always try to pack light but somehow it never really happens. I do try to work out the outfits I plan to wear each day/evening on holiday and pack accordingly. However, I admit I usually end up over-packing and forgetting something - last summer I forgot to take any shorts with me on holiday which meant that I rather wasted all of the separate tops I brought to go with them!

2.      What are your must packs?

For summer holidays, I always have a pack of wet wipes in my bag - boring but always always useful! They also double up as face wipes if you forget them.

3.      What are you happy to leave behind?

My laptop! And my straighteners! On holiday I am far too busy sight-seeing, catching up with friends or just having fun/relaxing to be on my laptop. And as many times as I take my straighteners with me, I never end up using them, so now just I don't bother.

4.      Any packing secrets that help you get everything into one suitcase?

Try to take items that will double up - do you really need both pairs of shorts or will one be adequate? Do you need three pairs of  plastic flip flops or will you just end up wearing your one favourite pair?

5.      Beach reading… what are you taking with you to read in the sand?

Two weeks ago when I was in Ibiza I read "I Heart New York". When I'm on holiday I like to read easy-going and light chick lit, which is exactly what this book is. It does have some wonderful descriptions of New York city which made me wish for a return visit very soon.

Friend Friday #41: Hair care

Source

This week's topic is aaaaall about the hair and everything to do with keeping your hair in tip top condition:

1. How often do you get your hair cut?

I try to have a hair cut every couple of months but it doesn't always seem to work out like that and it's usually something more like every three to four months.

2. Do you go to the same stylist each time, try someone new, go to the cheap hair cutting chains or live it up in a salon?

I go to the same stylist and have done for the past six years. When I lived at home my mother always sent me to the cheapest salon in town for a dry cut but once I moved to university I began to experiment by trying out some of the salons in Cardiff. In my final year I eventually found "the one": Paul at the Blew Room. I don't think I have ever had a bad hair cut from Paul - now that is something to boast, in my opinion!

3. Do you colour your hair? How often? What’s your natural colour?

Yes. I colour my hair every couple of months or so. My natural hair colour is a mid to dark brown with some red/auburn undertones. However as it is naturally quite dark, I already a good few grey hairs, so I like to cover them. I also love the way in which the colour improves the condition of my hair and makes it so gorgeously glossy. I use L'Oréal Casting Crème Gloss which is a semi-permanent colour. I always used to use Dark Chocolate but recently I have opted for Black Cherry which is a rich dark red colour.

4. The one thing you always do to keep your hair looking great is:

Colour it regularly! Whenever my hair starts to look a little dull, I grab a bottle of hair dye and my locks are looking luscious within half an hour.

5. What hair trend do you love and wish you could rock?

Every few years I decide to go short but for some reason it never quite looks right. I would ultimately love to go for a proper pixie crop and dye it platinum blonde - can you image such a wonderfully dramatic change?! Like these ladies:

Carey Muligan; Kate Winslet in Vogue; and Michelle Williams.

What style/cut/colour do you wish you could rock?

Post Swap Friend Friday #40: Blog Pet Peeves

As I am away sunning myself and celebrating my birthday, I have asked a few of my favourite bloggers to guest post for me. Today, France of Oranges and Apples and I have swapped Friend Friday posts - so you can find my post over at Franca's blog. But before you go read mine, make sure to check out Franca's post:

Madame de la Sofa {42/365}
Unrelated photo that came up when I searched
flickr for ‘annoying’ via here.

Hello!

This is Franca from Oranges and Apples. Emily and I are swapping posts today, for Friend Friday, where the topic is top 5 things that annoy us about blogs we read. I’m probably going to come across quite harsh, so I just wanted to say right from the off that none of the things I will be talking about will make me immediately stop reading a particular blog, and I completely understand how and why they happen, but they are things I dislike and will make it less likely that I’ll return. Please excuse any rantiness!

1. Poor grammar, spelling and quality of writing. Writing is hugely important to me and I think any blogger should make the extra effort to make sure that their writing is coherent. I generally try to proofread everything a couple of times before I post. But I appreciate that that’s not always possible and I do post some pretty rushed stuff myself sometimes. I am much less bothered by typos than by mistakes that make me think the author actually doesn’t know any better. Top 3 offenders:
  • Would of instead of would have. Where did this madness start, please? It somehow seems to have become acceptable, but it is not. It makes no sense, and it’s not even any shorter. If you can’t be bothered with would have, and even would’ve is too much effort, by all means write wouldve. I use didnt and wasnt occasionally, so I won’t judge. But I will judge people for making up a completely random alternative spelling. Desist.
  • Wonder/wander. The world at large (including Mr. Oranges and Apples) seems to not realise wander exist. They’re not even pronounced the same!
  • Their/They’re. Obvious.
Ooops, that was quite a lot in a oner! The rest of them are shorter, I promise.

2. Poor photography. You don’t need a great camera to take good pictures, and the internet is awash with outfit photography tips and there’s plenty of easy free editing software out there. Life’s too short for badly lit blurry photos in front of cluttered backgrounds.

3. Pop ups asking me to subscribe to the blog feed before I’ve even read the page. There is nothing that will make it less likely for me to actually subscribe. Follow options should be easily accessible, but pushing yourself onto unsuspecting readers is just rude.

4. No share buttons for posts. I didn’t appreciate just how annoying not having these is until I joined twitter. It drives me mad when I want to tweet a really good blog post, and then I have to go to an URL shortener site, and shorten the link manually, then go to twitter and write the thing. Chances are I won’t bother.

5. Personal bitchiness. I don’t mind people writing about their private life, I really enjoy some highly personal blogs, and neither do I mind people complaining about things (including things people have written on blogs) and having a bit of a rant. But bringing these two together and complaining about a specific person in your life that readers don’t know is just bizarre. It feels like being cornered by a stranger at a party who feels it’s ok to just offload all their weirdness. You have no idea who they’re talking about and you know that what you’re getting only one side of the story, but no idea what they other side might be and it’s just awkward. If you must bitch about specific people, please make it generic enough for other people to relate to. Complaining about people always cancelling plans at the last minute = OK, complaining about a particular friend and how they always let you down = not so much.

And those were my top 5 annoying things! Thanks Emily for having me!

Friend Friday #39: Outside influences

A couple weeks ago we talked about our inspiration when it comes to blogging and so many people said that other fashion bloggers are a huge inspiration. But there are many other factors that influence us.

1. What magazines do you subscribe to?

A pile of just a few of my magazines!

I'm a complete magazine addict and my subscriptions are testament to that - as are the numerous piles of magazines that clutter our apartment, much to the horror of the boyf! I have a subscription to Grazia for my weekly fashion and celebrity gossip fix. My mum bought me a British Vogue subscription for Christmas - because what else do you buy a fashion blogger?! And finally, I have a further subscription to Elle UK which means that I get the special subscriber covers each month. But having these subscriptions doesn't mean that I don't go out and buy more magazines each month - sometimes, I just can't help myself!

2. Do you watch any fashion TV shows?

I love to watch Project Runway and its British counterpart, Project Catwalk - you might remember that I was lucky enough to go backstage at the catwalk show at London Fashion Week for the winner of the first series of Project Catwalk, Jasper Garvida (which you can see here and here):

Jasper Garvida directs a model in one of his creations backstage at LFW AW11

If I had Sky TV I am pretty sure that I would be glued to America's Next Top Model. But, alas, I don't, so I'm not.

3. Beyond blogs, what websites do you frequent for fashion inspiration?

I visit Vogue.co.uk - particularly for its Street Chic section. Apart from that, the other fashion websites I frequent tend to be blogs, whether they be independent fashion blogs or commercial blogs, like Topshop's blog.

4. Advertisements play a huge role in forming public opinion about a product or brand… what ads do you like and why?

I am definitely one to be influenced by adverts. Next adverts always inspire me - particularly last autumn's advertising campaign:

This is one campaign that I truly loved and even inspired me to buy the fabulous aviator jacket (I am an advertiser's dream!):

5. Do you own any fashion books?

I don't have any fashion books... yet! But I do have a ready-made wish list.

What inspires you?

Friend Friday #38: A Woman's Right to Shoes*

Shoes are my "thing". They always were. They always will be. So imagine my delight when this week's Friend Friday discussion was about this very subject! And then imagine my despair when I realised that I didn't have any time - due to work commitments - to write said post. But I couldn't let the opportunity to write it pass me by so I am posting it now, for your reading pleasure:

1.What is your go-to pair of shoes?

Ballet pumps. I love a beautiful pair of heels but in spite of the many pairs that fill the shoe racks around my flat, I am a flats girl. A simple pair of ballet pumps will go with anything; from jeans to dresses to skirts.

2. What goes into your shoe buying decisions?

Not much thought or rationale. Simply love. Or lust, most likely. If I find a pair of shoes I like, they will usually end up coming home with me. Of course, if any have a sale sticker on, they are definitely mine.

3. The majority of the shoes in your closet are what colour?

Probably black. As with my wardrobe, I seem to lean towards the safe neutral colour of black. However, unlike my wardrobe, I do tend to branch out a little more in my choice of footwear colour, including red, pink, yellow and blue:

4. When it comes to design shoes what are your favourite brands and why?

I don't own any designer shoes.... yet! New Look seems to have provided me with many of the shoes on my shoe racks but I confess that I am not particularly loyal to any particular brand and will choose any that takes my fancy on any given day!

5. If price wasn’t an issue, you’d own which shoe?

There are two shoes that I dream of owning:

A pair of classic Louboutin pumps

Carrie Bradshaw's blue Manolo Blahnik's

What is your dream shoe?

Friend Friday #37: Fitness and Fashion

Source

I'm sure most of us have been glued to our television sets today, watching Prince William and Catherine Middleton marry in a ceremony at Westminster Abbey this morning. But as their celebrations continue in Buckingham Palace this evening, our lives return to normal. Ah well.

This week's topic for Friend Friday is fitness. Not something that I confess to know too much about, but we shall see, as I answer the questions posed:

1. Do you keep some kind of fitness routine? Why?

I am lazy. I take no pride in my laziness. But when I get home from a long day at work the very last thing I feel like doing is heading out to the gym. The most exercise I usually do is swimming on holiday. If I stay in a hotel when I'm away with a swimming pool, I will always enjoy a swim in the evening and the morning. In spite of this, I hate going to the local swimming pool. However, I have recently started attending a Zumba class and have found myself enjoying it. Which is nice.

I also cycle during the summer months. In the winter it is simply too wet for me to get my bike out. However this summer I will take my driving test and am sure that the lure of the bike, even in the warm weather, will not be quite so strong as when it was the only alternative to walking!

2. Has working out, maybe training for a marathon or something of that nature, helped with your own perception of body image?

As I'm only just starting to "work out" it has yet to really change my body image or even to have effect on my body - here's to hoping for the next month or two!!

3. When you are hitting the gym or just going out for a long walk what do you wear? Is it about functionality or fashion?

Last year I was asked to trial Reebok's EasyTone trainers and the brand were kind enough to gift me, not only the trainers, but a complete training outfit. The kit is mainly for functionality but I do have a bit of a hot pink and black colour scheme going on. Which reminds me, I think shorts are definitely the way forward in the hot weather because hot weather + workout = hot hot HOT! Need to buy shorts!

4. Do you feel there is a cultural perception of what you ‘should’ be doing for your own physical fitness?

I have to admit that I have never felt any real pressure to "do" physical exercise but I think that in the last year or so I have become more aware of the fact that I should really be exercising for my own good - but this awareness is more from within than from anyone outside pressure.

5. Dream big… what would be your ultimate fitness goal.

Maybe a 5K run - or walk - for charity would be nice to do. It would be nice to have something to work towards. But that will be in another couple of years, I think.

How about you, do you work out? If so, what do you do? Any advice for me?

Friend Friday #36: Inspiration

we heart it

To further mark one year of FBFF this week we are going to answer the same set of questions that Katy asked this time last year. I didn't sign up for FBFF until it was almost four months old* so I am particularly pleased to be able to answer these questions, for me for the first time:

1. Which celebrity (celebrities) do you look to for fashion inspiration?

This changes every week! It completely depends on the latest cover girl on the latest magazine I have bought, or the latest film I've seen at the cinema or have been playing continuously in my DVD player, or maybe a musician or artist who I am currently listening to, or someone whose style has just caught my eye. My weekly Style Icons series demonstrates just how many celebrities inspire me. But right now? A bit of Eva Green gothic chic, a bit of Nicole Richie's LA surfer look, a bit of French inspiration from Audrey Tautou and Clémence Poésy with a final pinch of retro influence from Jean Seberg and Audrey Hepburn. And many more who I could care to mention but I won't bore you!

2. When it comes to your own personal style, what inspires you?

Bloggers. Mainly. Street Style inspires me on a daily basis, whether from The SartoralistGarance Doré, FaceHunter and StockholmStreetStyle. I think I've said it before and I'll say it again, I find bloggers' style more accessible than fashion magazines which promote high end fashion from the catwalk. Many bloggers tend to demonstrate a wonderful and creative sense of style using budget and high street pieces.

3. How do you hope to inspire your readers?

I hope to inspire in my readers the notion that it is not necessary to spend a fortune to look good. Over the past year I have come to the conclusion that, unless I really can't help it, I never intend to spend full price for any item. Looking back over the purchases I have made in recent months, this intention has been realised. I hope that this can help all of you to also be bargainista stylistas!

4. Outside the realm of fashion who/what inspires you?

Difficult one to answer. Hmm.. I am inspired by the people in my life, by my mother, my sister, my grandmother - all of whom are courageous in their own ways. The sea or any stretch or expanse of water is inspiring to me - not necessarily the water itself but the feeling I get when sitting beside it.

we heart it

5. And since Idol is ending… Which songs inspire you?

Oh no, this is the worst question I could have been asked as the boyf always tells me what terrible taste in music I have! Right now I love a retro tune that I can dance to as I get ready to go out! Something like, The Monkees' I'm a Believer:

Who or what inspires you?

Friend Friday #35: Gratitude

we heart it

This is the official one-year anniversary of FBFF! So Katy wanted to do something about gratitude for the big day. As she says, we each have so many people in our lives and in the blogging community who have helped us along the way. It’s time to shine the spotlight on them and give credit where credit is due.

1. When it comes to me personally – I owe a lot of who I am to:

This could very quickly turn into a very soppy and emotional post - so I promise to try my best not to let that happen!! But I guess the way I was raised by my parents influenced who I am today. My parents always made it clear that it didn't matter what I did (within reason, of course), only that whatever it was made me happy. I think that knowledge that they'd always be proud of me, whatever I was doing, gave me the confidence to study what I wanted and to pursue the career that I wanted.

2. When it comes to me professionally – I owe a lot of who I am to:

My dad, my A-level history teacher, all of my politics lecturers, my first boss when I interned in Brussels and my current boss. My dad and I used to have "our" time whilst watching the 10 o'clock news or Newsnight or Question Time. I remember the 1997 election as the first time I really began to take an interest in what was happening and who would be running our country. I couldn't yet vote but my dad and I would spending many an evening discussing the different parties and debates the rights and wrongs of one policy or another. Then I had the chance to study British politics post-WWII for a part of my history A-level and suddenly realised that this was what I wanted to study at university. My very different and varied modules at university confirmed this and my lecturers' enthusiasm for the subject rubbed off. And the rest, as they say, is history!

3. When it comes to the art of blogging, I’m grateful to these people for helping me through some rough spots:

Not sure about rough spots so much but when I got a little disheartened recently, it was the lovely V of Grit and Glamour who made me smile again - and not lose my cool. I also think, that on this first birthday of the FBFF Group, Katy deserves a special mention - even if I'm ever feeling a little uninspired the FBFF questions always get me thinking about something new and interesting.

4. One blogging challenge I’m grateful happened because it made me stronger was…

Last summer, I attempted to do the 30 for 30 challenge and failed after just a week or two. I was so pleased when it came around again a couple of months ago and even though it took me a while, it felt like such an accomplishment to finish it, I was so glad to have had the opportunity to take part again.

5. To my readers, I’d like to say…

we heart it

Friend Friday #34: Spring Trends

This week, Katy asked: What are the top 5 Spring trends that you are looking forward to seeing/sporting this season?

Colour blocking: I am not a huge colour wearer but I do like adding a splash of colour to an otherwise all black outfit – so this will be my take on the trend.

Pleated midi skirts: I loved the pleated midi skirts that made their way down the Chloe catwalks from Spring/Summer 2011 and am on the hunt for one of my very own, like this one from Whistles.

Biker chic: Every year I try to hunt out the perfect leather biker jacket and as yet, I still don't have one. Maybe this season will be the season?

Denim flares: I am so after a pair of flared jeans for Spring, like these from Dorothy Perkins which The Online Stylist was sporting recently.

Maxis: still on trend and still going to be big in my wardrobe for Spring/Summer 2011.

Friend Friday #33: Rules of Engagement

Source

This week's Friend Friday topic is Rules of Engagement. As a new blogger the rules of engagement with others in the blogging world is uncharted territory. For example, how do you deal with Tweets, emails, DMs etc… from people who seem to be only pushing their own blog. A lot of what we all learn about how to do it is from trial and error. But this week's posts from all of the Friend Friday bloggers might help new bloggers to learn from our mistakes:

1. Guest posts are a good way to gain new exposure. What do you think is the appropriate way to go about securing a guest spot?

Some bloggers actively ask for guest blog submissions, or have a page dedicated to explaining their process for approaching the blogger about it, like mine. But for the most part, make sure that if you want to guest post on a blog, you know what that blog is about, what makes the blogger tick and the style of the blog. Check before sending that the blogger hasn't already written about the subject - if they have, don't despair, why not find another blog it might fit into? To start with, send a short email, explaining who you are, giving a link to your blog, and a brief outline of the post you had in mind. If they like it, great. If not, try someone else? Or ask how it could be changed to fit. Once you have written the piece and sent it to the blogger, don't be upset if when they edit it a little. It will happen. Make sure too, to link and tweet the link to the guest post once it is published - it's only polite. If you'd like the opportunity to guest post here, on Sugar and Spice, head over to my page and drop me an email. For an even more comprehensive and coherent guide to pitching a guest blog, check out Liberty London Girl's post over on IFB.

Source

2. Leaving comments is essential to growing your blog. But how can you leave a comment without coming across as ‘Follow Me. Follow Me!’?

Leaving comments is something that always gets me. I can go for a few weeks leaving thoughtful comments and then another few when I am still reading all of the same blogs avidly but not leaving any comments. That's bad, right? If it's a blog you read and comment on often, a short comment every now and then is fine - just to check in. But for the most part, I try to leave a comment which demonstrates that I have actually read the post on which I am commenting and might even add something to the post. Chelsea, over at Dear Winnie my new blog addiction), recently wrote a great post all about commenting and laid out her 4-step guide to writing a comment:

1. Say whether you liked the post or not (and use the person’s name!).

2. Say what you liked or didn’t like (see the next section for more on this).
3. Say why you liked or didn’t like it.
4. Thank the blogger and wish him/her well.

3. We’ve all gotten a mass email at one time or another asking for blog exposure, a link exchange, etc… But the mass emails don’t work. How do you make your email stand out from the crowd?

Unless I have an actual reason to, I don't tend to send emails. If I'm planning a specific post or series of posts that I would like input from other bloggers on, then I will send an email, but I make sure they are to each individual and a little bit more personal than a group email.

4. In interacting with other bloggers where do you draw the line between seeking support and begging for exposure?

I think that's just it, any communication should be genuine and, if possible, have an additional mutual support angle. If you are simply asking for a link and nothing in return, expect maybe a reciprocal link, then it is unlikely that anyone will respond.

5. What’s one rule of engagement error you made and how have you remedied that?

In the beginning, I used to leave very short comments on posts on any blog. I was very indiscriminate and impersonal. But, as I have discussed above, I have learned the error of my ways and am now (for the most part) a reformed commenter.

What are your dos and don'ts of blogging?

Friend Friday #32: Feminism and Fashion

"Dress shabbily and they remember the dress;
dress impeccably and they remember the woman"
-- Coco Chanel

we heart it

With International Women's Day falling at the beginning of this month (on Tuesday 8 March), this week's Friend Friday topic is somehow fitting: feminism. It is also one which has sparked much debate, particularly since the proliferation of fashion blogs. Indeed within the fashion blogging community itself there has been discussion and, some might say, "soul searching" over how these two seemingly opposing notions can be reconciled. The Feministified blog, with others, has begun her own Feminist Fashion Bloggers network, a network which brings together bloggers who identify as feminists whilst also proclaiming their love of fashion.

For me, my own feminist experience begins with my studies and my other "passion"; politics. It might seem like a simplistic position to start from, but hear me out:

By May 6th this year (2011), the people of Wales will have had the opportunity to vote three times in less than as many months, on two separate occasions (a referendum last week on more law making powers for the National Assembly, and in May in the four-yearly elections to the National Assembly and a further UK-wide referendum on electoral reform for Westminster elections). Many won't vote. As a woman (and, I suppose by dint, a feminist), this saddens me. As a politics graduate and a keen history student, I am keenly aware of the struggles by several generations of my fair sex to win our right to be allowed to vote. Indeed, even today, in the twenty-first century, in some countries the right to vote in free and fair elections is a right women and men can only dream of – to give up our right therefore seems rude and foolish, at best, and ignorant, at worst. Indeed, this week I read a hugely compelling account of the struggle women face to achieve equality all around the world.

But my interest in politics and the history of the right to vote does not mean that I don't care about how I dress or my appearance, it does not mean that I don't put on make-up or put on a pretty dress or a pair of high heels. The two are not mutually exclusive.

Feminism is defined as: "the doctrine advocating social, political, and all other rights of women equal to those of men".

Does caring about how you look/dress mean that you can't also care about how much you are paid or your right to vote?

Feminism has always been about the right to choice: so why then must we choose between feminism or fashion? Surely, we can choose both?

The idea that a woman can be both fashionable and a feminist seems to run in complete contradiction to the frivolous nature of fashion and those who choose to exist in its world. But maybe herein lies the problem: for years, we, women, have allowed others - men and other women too - to belittle fashion and any sort of an interest in looking good as frivolous and have allowed ourselves to be branded air-heads. But when have these people who so belittle us stopped to think about their own hobbies or interests or passions; doesn't it seem rather glutonous and greedy to sit over a five course meal and consume as many bottles of wine and discuss the tone or character of said wine? We need to eat and drink to live, it might be argued; but to eat and drink to such quantities when a simple meal accompanied by a glass of water would suffice? Afterall, no one wanders around the office naked. Do they?!

I think it is high time that we reclaimed the right to be frivolous with fashion and a feisty feminist to boot.

we heart it

1. Do you think there is an incapability between feminism and a love for fashion?

Clearly not. I think that, unfairly, a stereotype has been formed by - mainly men - of women who are interested in fashion. I think it is fuelled by a lack of interest on their part and a lack of understanding. This, in turn, has led some women to believe that in order to achieve equality with men we must also adopt this attitude. But that is where the problem, for me, lies. I don't think that women should have to discard their interests in favour of male pursuits and hobbies in order to be treated equally, instead we should be able to retain our "female" interests* and yet still be treated equally in terms of pay, politics, jobs, etc.

2. There is more to each of us than a love for fashion, how do you incorporate every aspect of yourself into your blog?

I'm not sure that I do, really. Fashion, until I started writing this blog, played very little of a role in my life - except for a rather worrying shopping addiction. I studied politics at university for seven years (no, I'm not a slow learner! I did a masters after my bachelors degree) and I now work in a political environment. But I prefer to keep this separate from my blog, whether or not this is a good thing, I'm unsure of; what do you think?

we heart it

3. With the fashion industry still being a male-dominated profession, how do you think it would differ if women played a larger role?

In a recent post on For Those About To Shop in which Laura identified her Feminist Style Icon - Diane Von Furstenberg - quote the designer:

"Christian Lacroix once told me that women designers make clothes and men designers make costumes. I think that’s true."

This is probably the crux of the issue; if women played a larger role in the design houses there would likely be less of an emphasis on controversial collections that seek to break taboos and more considered collections that reflect the lives of the women who will ultimately wear the clothes on show.

4. How is your self-image and the way you carry yourself informed by your beliefs?

I work - and live - in a fairly conservative environment and I like to use fashion and clothes to show a slightly less serious side to me.

5. Do you think clothing/makeup/hair helps communicate the truth about yourself or are those things superfluous add-ons?

As much as we might protest otherwise, or hope it not to be the case, first impressions do play an important part in our opinions of people. Of course, these can change, but it isn't always the norm. Therefore, I think clothing/hair/make-up plays a hugely important part in communicating the truth about yourself.

*NB: I do realise that there a lot of men who are also interested in fashion and women who are interested in more traditionally "male" hobbies

Friend Friday #31: Finding the balance

we heart it

Blogging can often feel like a full-time job and when you have one of those already it can feel incredibly hard to find the right balance in your life. Katy, of ModlyChic and Friend Friday fame, wrote an awesome post this week: How to Blog More Often without More Time. Which seems to be an exceeding good introduction to the question she posed for this week's Friend Friday top: How do you do it all and still live, work and play as you should?

1. When it comes to prioritizing your life, in what place does blogging fall?

Blogging is something I do in my spare time. As far as priorities go, it definitely comes after work and spending time with friends and loved ones but also definitely before housework!!!

2. We all wish we had more free time to dedicate to blogging and all it entails. What are your tricks for taking advantage of the time you do have to be as productive as possible?

I keep a notebook with me at all times to make sure that should inspiration hit, I can will never lose the ideas!! I use train journeys and lunchtimes and coffee breaks and evenings in front of the TV or a film to blog too. I tend to compartmentalise my time for each of the different blogging tasks that I do each day/week/whatever. The majority of my time is probably spent researching for new blog posts or writing them but then I often put aside an hour to catch up on those blogs on my reading list and to comment. I find it important to put this time aside, otherwise I end up skimming new posts on my favourite blogs and not leaving comments.

3. Have you discovered any short-cuts that makes blogging easier or more time efficient?

Scheduling posts. It is my absolute (not-so) secret weapon in making sure I post every day and yet don’t actually have to be in front of my computer every day! Series of posts certainly helps to make this easier, things like my Style Icon series, my Mani of the Week series and Wardrobe Basics.

4. Do you have an editorial calendar or something similar that helps you plan ahead?

As above, I don’t exactly have an editorial calendar but I do schedule all of my series’ posts. I also keep ideas etc in my drafts section and when I feel particularly uninspired, I head to them and re-work a few ideas until I come up with something.

5. If time wasn’t an issue what you would be doing on your blog/for your blog that you aren’t doing now?

A lot more outfit posts and more styled shoots in more exciting locations. That is the thing that seems to always go down the best but that I have least time for.

If you're a blogger too, how do you fit your life and job around your blog? You might also fancy checking out this post over at IFB which reassured me earlier this week, that, "It’s OK to not be a professional blogger!".

Friend Friday #30: Beauty Products

Source
I admit it, I am so excited to read everyone else's responses to this week's Friend Friday topic. Aside from fashion, I am addicted to buying the latest make-up or beauty product. During a recent rummage in the cupboard in our bathroom I discovered three - yes, THREE - unopened bottles of fake tan! Now, that seems a little excessive. I have therefore made a pact with myself not to buy any new beauty products until I have used up all of the ones I already have (obviously, I can buy shampoo if I have used up all of my shampoos but still have five bottles of body lotion in the cupboard!!). So, you'd think that with all of this buying, I might know a thing or two about beauty products but I still feel woefully ignorant. But I will do my best for you:

1. What's your favourite drug store makeup product and your favourite higher-end product?

Boots No7 is my go-to make-up brand. Mainly because they so often do their £5 vouchers and I therefore feel myself compelled to spend them! Their mascaras are particularly good and my two favourites are their Exceptional Definition Mascara for evening and their Lash 360 for everyday.

For a little luxury in my make-up bag, I like to treat myself to a Chanel nail polish or two every so often, as you'll know by now, probably!

2. Is there one type of product that is your go-to, can't live without?

Mascara. Without a doubt, I would not go out without mascara. I do. Of course. But I prefer not to.

I have long long eyelashes - everyone comments - but they do straight out, so I prefer to curl them and then add a quick wipe of mascara.

3. What's the best hair product you've ever used?

Toni & Guy's Straight and Shine Smoothing Balm is the absolute best ever hair product. My hair is frizzy. Frizzy to the point of looking like I had an accident with my fingers, an electric socket and some water! Yep, truly, it is that bad. So, I straighten my hair every single day. But this balm makes my hair so much straighter before I even start to straighten. And it stays straight too. Even if the horrid British weather decides to rain.

4. Fess up, what's the worst beauty look you've tried to rock and look back at now with a little shame or apprehension that you actually did that?

A pixie crop. It didn't look good. In fact, I looked like a boy. No, really. I have such a flat chest and, at 17, had no clue how to dress, that I do just look like a boy!! Agh! A whole year of my life with photos I can not look at. Oh well. You live and learn!

5. When it comes to beauty products, we all use the same basic products. What do you use that helps show off your personal flare and personality?

I (nearly) always have my nails painted in some bright colour - red, blue, navy, green, purple, black, beige, pink, orange, fuscia - you name it, I've probably got that colour in my collection!

Black eyeliner and kohl is another favourite.

What is your can't-live-without-it beauty product? Which piece of make-up can you not leave the house without? Tell me, tell me!!

Friend Friday #29: Blog Awards

we heart it

Welcome to the very first FBFF Blog Awards!

How cool, no? Here's how it's going to work: the FBFF bloggers will nominate one blogger for each of the categories below and explain why they have nominated said blogger. All the responses will be collated and then the top five bloggers named in each category will be the official finalists. Those finalists will then be opened up to a public vote over a couple weeks. Got it?!

I can't say it's been easy over the past few weeks to come up with just one name for each of the categories. I have carried around a piece of paper with the categories listed on and have put numerous bloggers in numerous categories. But last night I finally realised, go with your heart. So I did:

we heart it

1. Creative Juices - most creative: Katie of What Katie Wore

2. The Real Deal - authenticity: Franca of Oranges and Apples

3. Spark Notes - most helpful: V of Grit and Glamour

4. Newbie - best blogger less than a year old: Veshoevius of The Taxonomy of My Wardrobe

5. Can You Hear Me Now - most connected: Jennine of The Coveted (and IFB)

6. If I had a Hammer - best DIY: Geneva of A Pair and a Spare

7. Tribe Leader - blogger who leads others and brings bloggers together: Katy of ModlyChic

8. Practically Perfect - most fashionable: Susie of Bargainista Fashionista

9. Paint by Numbers - best beauty blogger: British Beauty Blogger

10. Renaissance Woman - best all-around blogger, fashion, beauty, lifestyle: Leia of Leia's Delight

Who would you nominate for the above awards? Did I choose right or is there someone better suited for one of the awards? There are so many wonderful blogs out there that choosing just one for each category was nearly impossible!

To see all of the other nominations for the FBFF Blog Awards, you can find them over at ModlyChic. And if you would like to be a part of the Friend Friday Group, you can find all of the details here.
